Regards sur la psychologie sociale expérimentale or “Perspectives on experimental social psychology” is a series of 5 video clips each of which consists of a short film of an experiment and a presentation to explain the following topics: the fundamental attribution error, the failure to assist a person in danger, the effects of a commitment process, the effects of categorisation and the effects of social comparison. The series was created in 2007 by VIDEOSCOP Université Nancy 2, the audio-visual and multimedia research and production department of Université Nancy2 (France).

This project targets university students, and particularly those in the field of social psychology. Experiments are the basis of many fundamental concepts in the field of social psychology, and these have been conducted in strict test conditions so the majority of them are only available to social psychology students in texts on paper. This online collection contains five experiments that are reconstructed and recorded. These videos show in particular the methodology used and the subjects’ reactions, thus visualising the concepts to make them easier to understand and remember. Each of the five recorded experiments is linked to a theoretical part, explaining the experiment and creating links with the theoretical concepts that students need to know and learn.

“Excellent resource in a domain that is not so easy to visualise or mediatise, but this is done with a sober and accurate effectiveness, embedded in a very straightforward and easy to use platform, with relevant and sufficient support materials. The project shows a high quality of didactics as much as a wise and rich use of media. Its direction and style are accurately designed to support the learning and not to distract from it, with images and sound that are essential and to the point. It offers a relevant approach for the target group, it is pleasant to use, inviting the viewer to learn, the explanation of the respective theory is quite innovative, clear, immediate and pleasant. An excellent example of instructional design using video in a challenging subject matter.”

Experiments are the basis of many fundamental concepts in the field of social psychology. This project aims to make available to all French students (and teachers) in social psychology a filmed reconstruction of five of these experiments to enable them to better understand the theoretical concepts but also the scientific approach used.

Learners can be students of programmes in psychology and/or communications and the filmed experiments are associated with several courses in psychology: social cognition, social influences, judging activities and sociocognitive processes, social representation, … As the videos are published on the canal-u website, the video library channel of French universities, they may be freely used by teachers and students from the associated universities as well as from other institutions.
