MEDEA Awards Highly Commended 2013

Chocolat 3b is an educational podcast, created by Luca Piergiovanni in collaboration with Scuola Secondaria I grado di Binago and with the Ufficio Scolastico di Como in Italy.

In the project, students are producers and publishers of audio and video content of different topics that are part of the school curricula. Pupils are the main protagonists of their work by creating audio and video episodes that then can be heard or seen in any mobile device, downloaded and exchanged between users. The main themes of the podcast are poetry, the works of the classics of Italian literature compared with the texts of the most famous Italian singers, as well as literature, art and history. Made "by students for students ", the Chocolat 3b is a way to teach pupils how to use the new technologies, the web and the social media in a new, more critical and creative way. The project has been extended to many other schools of the Como area that create content for the podcast, following the schools pedagogical goals and contents.

The educational project was considered a good educational practice by the Italian Ministry of Education and has been the subject of study of many entities dealing with media education. The project received numerous awards, including: finalist at Policultura 2010, Global Junior Challenge 2009 and received a Special Prize at the National Competition of educational podcasts in 2012 etc.

What the judges said

"The pedagogical approach of the project intends to give students the tools they need to be the main actors of their own learning. The video and audio podcast activity involves youngsters into their own learning process: first of all they become more engaged in the topic, secondly they need to be knowledgeable about the topic and finally and transversally, they have to master the technologies they use. This project impacts mostly on the cognitive and relational benefits among the students. The idea to involve elder people in these lessons is very good. Podcast (audio or video) is well chosen as the solution to support active learning like this. The aesthetic quality of the videos and the site is quite good, everything is clear and enjoyable. The mix between off the shelf online tools (such as YouTube or podOmatic) is simple and effective.

The pedagogical attention and the students-centred experience built around Chocolat3B is a good way to use media and technologies into the learning process. Using the podcast tool like this is an asset for the learning process, it is relatively cheap and easy to implement. It demonstrates an interesting interdisciplinary approach with a dynamic framework that includes future projects, international dimension and cooperation, and a very large audience (in term of contents but also in terms of digital divide, including grandparents on the web, etc.). The approach can be adapted to further technological developments: it is still very relevant to use radio broadcasting as the model for narration, focusing on the listening and comprehension skills, requiring a high level of concentration, particularly with digital native students.

The project is a stimulating experience for all users, from the producers to the consumers, in terms of learning, debating and broadening their knowledge and horizons. The project is stimulating and appeals to a wide range of people for its diverse content and its usability: it is based on sound applications that are commonly used by younger generations, but also adapted to older persons that are not comfortable with extensive use of contemporary media devices."

Luca Piergiovanni about the creation of Chocolat 3b Podcast

"The Chocolat 3b podcast was created as a didactical teaching method to be more appealing and effective for the students and the world they are living in. Podcasting is a learning environment that integrates the language text, audio and video languages that students use every day, but only in a social way. In fact, the entire project is based on the acquisition of "21st Century Skills" for students to help them learn critical thinking and problem solving with communication, collaboration, media and web capabilities in ICT. More specifically, the project offers the possibility to enhance students cognitive levels, to learn how to: use a proper oral and written language; improve diction;manage information overload of the network in a critical way; inform themselves on media literacy. During the creation of their own project, students learn how to use equipment such as mixers, as well as recording techniques and audio file manipulation.

The first step in creating a podcast was the studyof texts and songs of Italian songwriters, comparing them to the poetries of the classics and transforming what students have learned in a script. The script was then recorded and shared online, where other students could see it and download it. The audio and video were also produced by students after a long process of collecting and elaborating information found on the web. Everything happens strictly inside the school teaching program. The podcast has been very successful, and the School Office decided to involve other schools in the Como area to collaborate on the project and create and share their own materials. Within the project Chocolat 3b Podcast you will find the educational proposal entitled ' European podcasting (http://europeanpodcasting.podomatic.com/) which is a partnership created by the European eTwinning Portal, through which many European schools produce and share audio-video podcasts of many different cultural and historical themes. The project has achieved the European eTwinning quality label.
